EDM filter is a key component used to filter the working fluid (usually oil or water-based fluid) in electrical discharge machining (EDM) equipment. Its main function is to filter metal particles, impurities and contaminants in the working fluid to ensure the stability and quality of the machining process.
1. Filter metal particles; Metal debris is made by the electrode and the work-piece during the EDM process. EDM filters prevent these particles from re-entering the machining area.
2. Keep the working fluid clean; Clean working fluid can improve machining accuracy and surface quality and reduce wear on electrodes and work-pieces.
3. Extend the life of the working fluid; EDM filters can extend the service life of the working fluid and reduce replacement frequency and cost by filtering contaminants
4. Protect equipment; Prevent metal particles and impurities from entering pumps, pipes and other equipment components, reducing equipment failures and maintenance requirements.

Types
Based on the filter medium and structure, EDM filters are mainly divided into the following;
1. Paper filter
- Use filter paper as the filter medium with low cost and easy to replace.
- Suitable for EDM processing of general precision.
2. Metal mesh filter
- Use metal mesh as the filter medium with high-temperature and corrosion resistance.
- Suitable for high flow but low precision filtering needs.
3. Bag filter
- Use filtering-bag as the medium with large filtering area and high dust holding capacity.
- Suitable for medium-accuracy EDM processing.
4. Element filter
- Use high-accuracy filter element (such as fiber or stainless steel filter element) with high filtering accuracy.
- Suitable for high-accuracy EDM processing.
5. Magnetic filter
- Utilizes the principle of magnetic adsorption and is specially used to filter ferromagnetic metal particles.
- Usually used in conjunction with other filters.
The filtration accuracy of EDM filters is usually expressed in microns (μm), indicating the minimum particle size.
Common filtration accuracy;
- Low accuracy; 50μm ~ 100μm (for rough processing)
- Medium accuracy;10μm ~ 50μm (for general processing)
- High accuracy; 1μm ~ 10μm (for high-accuracy processing)
EDM filters need to be checked and replaced regularly to ensure the effect.
The replacement depends on the processing material, working fluid contamination and the type of filter.
Common replacement signals;
- Deterioration of processing surface quality
- Poor working fluid flow
- Filter clogging indicator alarms
1. Blockage; The filter may be clogged with contaminants after long-term use, resulting in poor working fluid flow.
2. Decreased filtration effect; Aging or damage will lead to a decrease in filtration effect and affect processing quality.
3. Leakage; If the filter is poorly sealed or damaged, it may cause leakage of the working fluid.
EDM filters are widely used in the followings;
- Mold manufacturing (such as injection molds, die casting molds)
- Aerospace parts processing
- Medical device manufacturing
- Precision parts processing
